A Shared Vision for the Future of Pharmacy in Alberta
Just over 10 years ago, the idea that pharmacy technicians could be regulated health professionals with an expanded scope of practice that would be used to further improve the care provided to patients was still just a concept. Pharmacy technicians are now not only regulated, but are essential health professionals who use a defined set of skills to positively impact patients and pharmacy practice.
Our profession has grown so much already, but we must continue to evolve to meet the needs and expectations of Albertans. At a very basic practice level, pharmacy technicians and pharmacists need to work together to provide care and services to our patients. It was with this thought in mind that PTSA collaborated with the Alberta Pharmacists’ Association (RxA), the Alberta College of Pharmacists (ACP) and the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists – Alberta Branch (CSHP-AB) to set a shared vision that will guide us on this journey.
In imagining the future of pharmacy in our province, six key themes emerged:
- Care
- Professionalism
- Relationships
- Integrated technology
- Quality drug distribution
- Engaging health system
As part of pharmacy teams that provide excellent care, pharmacy technicians have a responsibility to consider how we can use our unique skills and full scopes of practice in meeting and exceeding professional expectations. We must be active partners in using technology and quality measures to improve not only the drug supply system, but the health system as a whole.
Now that PTSA has committed to the Vision, the next step will be to put it into action and support Alberta pharmacy technicians in doing the same. Stay tuned for more information on what PTSA is doing to keep the momentum moving our profession forward.
