In September, we asked the PTSA membership to tell us which of the initiatives proposed by the Board should be priority for the upcoming year. A total of 55 members responded to the online survey. The top 10 initiatives identified were:

  1. Collaborate with partner organizations on advocacy efforts in support of changes to narcotic handling legislation (75%)
  2. Collaborate with partner organizations to determine next steps for a whitepaper in support of pharmacy technicians administering injections (69%)
  3. Promote available self-study continuing education modules (53%)
  4. Hold a conference in Calgary in 2025 (49%)
  5. Promote one continuing education opportunity each month (in-person, webinar, self-study, or external) (49%)
  6. Respond to consultations for advocacy opportunities (45%)
  7. Hold activities and promote RxTechDay (44%)
  8. Hold activities and promote Pharmacy Appreciation Month (35%)
  9. Develop a recognition program for preceptors (31%)
  10. Welcome new pharmacy technicians to the profession (31%)

Comments shared by respondents highlighted the importance of having both in-person and virtual education opportunities available. It was also clear that advocating for expanded roles for pharmacy technicians is needed so that Alberta doesn’t fall too far behind other provinces in terms of scope and integration in practice.

The board identified an additional ten initiatives, in addition to those already prioritized by the membership, to work on or investigate over the coming months. These include advocacy efforts in response to changes to entry-to-practice competencies and improving communications through the blog, newsletter and social media. Ensuring there are policies in place that keep the Society running and provide support to member volunteers is also priority for the board to work on this year.

Stay tuned for regular updates. If you’d like to contribute your time and ideas to helping achieve the priorities, consider volunteering on a committee. Contact us at info@ptsa.ca for more information and to get involved.
