Recap: 19th Annual PTSBC Conference

The Pharmacy Technician Society of British Columbia hosted its 19th Annual Conference on October 24–25, 2025, at the River Rock Casino Resort in Richmond, BC. This vibrant event brought together over 150 attendees, 30+ sponsors, and 12 engaging speakers for two days of learning, networking, and celebration of the pharmacy technician profession.
Friday evening featured a lively trade show and networking event, where attendees connected with sponsors and peers. The night concluded with a performance by comedic magician Chris Yuill, whose hilarious stage presence and mind-bending illusions left the audience thoroughly entertained.
On Saturday, participants had the opportunity to earn 6.25 accredited continuing education units through eight thoughtfully curated presentations. These sessions covered a wide range of topics, including strategic planning from the BC College of Pharmacists and the province’s implementation of CIRCL, BC’s version of Alberta’s new CQI+ reporting system. B.C. is implementing a new Health Professions and Occupations Act (HPOA) in April of 2026. With this, council members for BC College of Pharmacists will now be appointed by the government (after an application process) and no longer elected. Renaming the college to be inclusive of all members, including technicians, is still delayed as the wording in the HPOA needs to change. The focus of the conference emphasized the importance of culturally safe and inclusive pharmacy care, encouraging attendees to reflect on how they can foster respectful and equitable environments in their workplaces.
A recurring theme throughout the event was the advancement of the pharmacy technician profession. Several speakers shared inspiring stories of their unique career paths, showcasing the diverse opportunities available to technicians across Canada. From clinical specialties to leadership roles, the message was clear: pharmacy technicians are making a meaningful impact and shaping the future of healthcare.
Mental health and burnout prevention were also key topics. Calgary-based keynote speaker Jody Urquhart delivered a powerful and humorous presentation on recognizing unhealthy stress and learning how to “burnout-proof” your day. Her insights resonated deeply with attendees, offering practical strategies for maintaining resilience and joy in demanding healthcare settings.
The conference wrapped up with multiple prize giveaways, including a grand prize of $500, adding an extra layer of excitement to an already memorable experience. For members of the Pharmacy Technician Society of Alberta, the event offered valuable insights, renewed inspiration, and a strong sense of community. It was a celebration of growth, connection, and the evolving role of pharmacy technicians in Canada.
