Do your patients know what to do to stay safe if they have a medication allergy? Ensure your patients know to:
- Write down the name of the medication and what happened (e.g., hives, trouble breathing). Patients should keep this record with you at all times.
- Inform all their healthcare providers know if they have any allergies to medications. This is very important when a new medication is being started, because it may be similar to the medication that they are allergic to.
- If your patient has a serious allergy, you should inform them of the benefits of wearing a medical alert bracelet or necklace explaining the allergy.
