Did you know that acetaminophen is found in over 700 prescription and over the counter products?
When used as directed acetaminophen is safe and effective. However, with it’s wide availability a patient could quickly accidentally overdose if they didn’t realize that it was in multiple products they are using concurrently. The total amount of acetaminophen taken in a day from all sources should not exceed 4,000 mg for adults and children 12 years and older.
As a pharmacy technician you can support your patients by watching out for potential accidental acetaminophen over-dose. When your patients are looking for over the counter pain relievers or cough and cold medication make sure you ask them what other products they are using and refer them to a pharmacist as needed.
