Muslims all over Canada are fasting for Ramadan. In North America, Ramadan will take place from May 26 – June 24 in 2017. During Ramadan Muslims fast from dawn until sunset, and this fast includes abstaining from taking medications. While those who are ill or who cannot fast due to medical reasons may be exempt, they may choose to take part in the fast. If your patients are participating in Ramadan they may need to speak to the pharmacist about their medications and options. Patient’s may need to adjust dosages, medication administration times, or formulations (i.e. changing from a short acting to a long acting formulation).
