Tip of the Week – Medical Marijuana: Cannabinoid Compounds

Did you know there are three classes of cannabinoid compounds?

  1. Endocanabinoids affect the immune system, memory, stress response, metabolism, appetite stimulation, reproduction and pain.
  2. Phytocannabinoids are approved to treat pain in patients with multiple sclerosis and advanced cancer. Sativex spray is an example of a phytocannabinoid.
  3. Synthetic cannabinoids are not extracted from the cannabis plant, instead they are made in a lab. Synthetic cannaboids are used to treat severe nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy. Nabilone is an example of a synthetic cannaboid.
