Tip of the Week – Communicating with Transgender Patients

June is Pride Month and members of the LGBT+ community and their allies will be holding celebratory and educational events all across the country. Pharmacy technicians have an opportunity, and a professional responsibility,  to build respectful relationships with members of this community. One way to do this is to ensure the language you use when communicating with members of the transgender community is appropriate and reflects your patient’s gender identity.

You will want to ensure that the pronouns you use  are the pronouns your patient is comfortable with. If you are unsure simply ask, “What pronouns do you use?”. You can also use gender neutral pronouns: they/them/their.
