My Top 5 Reasons for Volunteering with PTSA

#5- Advocating for Pharmacy Technicians

Did you know that PTSA regularly meets with pharmacy stakeholders? This year we have sat down with The Alberta College of Pharmacists (ACP) and the Alberta Pharmacists Association (RxA) to discuss issues that are important to technicians. We travelled to Ottawa to meet with the Canadian Association of Pharmacy Technicians (CAPT) and other provincial advocacy groups to discuss successes and challenges faced by pharmacy technicians and to advocate for technicians on a national level in regards to changing federal legislation of ordering, receiving, and destruction of narcotics.

#4- Becoming part of a Provincial Organization

It’s true, although this year the Executive is currently based in Edmonton, we have board members and committee leads from Calgary, Red Deer, and Grande Prairie and we are always looking for more people from other areas of the province to become involved! Our meetings are scheduled so board members are able to call in and participate, even if they are near the board.

#3- Being a leader for YOUR profession

The skills I learned from being involved with the 2013 and 2015 PTSA conferences have been useful within my professional life. Maybe it’s reading contracts and deciphering what the fine print means. Maybe it’s lining up speakers and ensuring everyone knows where to be & when. My experiences are invaluable and I will carry them with me as I go forward professionally and personally!

#2- Building relationships in Alberta & across Canada within the Pharmacy Industry

Believe it or not Pharmacy is a small world and it’s not hard to meet someone who works with someone…..What better way to meet a future co worker?? Becoming involved with PTSA is a great way to open doors and to learn of new and exciting possibilities are out there for you!

#1- The opportunities are endless!

Whether it’s meeting an Olympic Gold medal athlete like Jon Montgomery or travelling to Ottawa to participate in national advocacy meetings, or working with RxA and ACP to create the Scope of Practice checklist, or hearing a world class speaker speak about finding what makes you (as a professional) special there are endless opportunities with PTSA.

We welcome Pharmacy Technicians from any area of Alberta to participate in our board or volunteer for one of our committees (newsletter, Techs in Touch, conference planning). No matter what your practice setting is, we would love to have you involved with the board. Nominations for new board members are being accepted now. Click here for more info.
